Phonics
Just want to know did your children know
Phonics or learn phonics at kindergarten and able to read the word
instantly?
Phonics is necessary as once the children
know phonics, is much easy for them to read the word straight away without
asking parents or teacher. The children are able to read and spell the
word which is not force to memories the word.
By knowing this, I sorted out the Phonics
that I know is Jolly Phonics, International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and Vowel
& Consonants Phonics.
Jolly phonics
The picture show the Jolly phonics and if
you want to know more about this phonics, click Jolly Phonics
for more information or contact M’sia Authorized Distributor Extrazeal M Sdn Bhd
for Jolly Learning products. At Jolly Phonics website as you can see,
some FREE resource can be
downloaded for learning too.
Some of the English Learning Centre does
carry the Jolly Phonics Classes, likes Morris Allen
English Program, Mortimer English
Club and British
Council.
International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)
I had bought the IPA flash card and also
the Vowel & Consonants Phonics with reader pen for him to learn.

IPA
To know more about the differences between
IPA and Vowel & Consonants Phonics in Chinese version can refer to Learning
Phonics.
It is much difficult to learn as IPA is an
alphabetic system of phonetic notation based primarily on the Latin
alphabet. As IPA has 20 vowel phonemes and consonants has 28 phonemes.
Vowel & Consonants Phonics
Vowel & Consonants Phonics which I
found out that is much easy to learn comparing with IPA. The patterns for
the Vowel & Consonants Phonics are
1)
Short & Long Vowel – a, e, i, o, u
2)
Vowel & Consonants (Blends & Digraphs)
A digraph is two letters that spell one
sound. Digraphs that spell consonant sounds include the letter pairs sh, ch,
th, wh, ck, ph, ng.
Blends is when two consonants make a distinct
sound bl, fr, sw, cr, dr..etc.
For addition learning, I’m quite like this Oxford
Phonics Spelling Dictionary as you can see “S” example from the below
picture. This is a teaching and learning resource to help young children
to read and spell using phonics. The words within this dictionary are
ordered using sounds we can identify in the words that we want to spell.
Or
the “Oxford Phonics World” and the workbook is also a good choice to learn and
practice the phonic.
And for practice, Scholastic K2 Series
include the Success Vowel and Success with Consonant Series (digraphs and
Blends) is my choice.
I didn’t enroll him for the phonics class
as phonics / han yu pin yin, as most of the classes are held one week once
within 1/2 hours, after the classes end, we need to practice at home as well,
like Sight Word, that you need to practice again and again so that he can
familiar with it. Without practice, Matt will forget everything that he
learns inside the class. I had been experience on this on his han yu pin
yin class.
Home study for Matt is suited him, as I can
practice him anytime, after he wake up and/or before bedtime. Just spend
5-10mins on the practice.
